This month’s Business of the Month award goes to Marvel Theater! Marvel Theater has been a place of entertainment for locals to go and catch the latest flicks for 90 years. The theater is owned by Norman Paul who is the son of the original owners. Norman Paul's parents first opened the Marvel in the 1920s as a live theater. In 1928, the Marvel burned to the ground and was rebuilt. In the 1970s, Paul converted a balcony in the Marvel to a second auditorium with a smaller screen.
The Marvel has recently gone through some changes. Steve Dougherty is now the new manager of the theater. Dougherty is also the owner of Westside Cinema in Litchfield. Along with management changes, the theater has been through some renovations. Dougherty has made many improvements including new carpeting and flooring, new restrooms, new exits, new concession stand, a state-of-the-art conversion to digital projection, and two new screens that are 3D capable.
If you happen to stop by the Marvel Theater, make sure and congratulate them on their award. The Chamber of Commerce along with the members of the community are very pleased that Steve Dougherty has shown the same dedication to keeping the Marvel a historic landmark in Carlinville that the Paul family had done for three generations.
